Italian Scotland is pleased to announce the upcoming ITALIAN CINEMA EVENT ‘From Page to Screen’ in collaboration with Comites Scozia e Irlanda del Nord.
This event aims to celebrate the XXIV edition of The Week of the Italian Language in the World, which usually takes place in October and this year has its theme ‘Italian and Books: the world between the lines’.
Italian cinema has always enjoyed a strong, fruitful relationship with literature. Since the silent era, generations of filmmakers have returned again and again to literary sources to craft imaginative, deeply personal adaptations that move beyond slavish fidelity.
In this accessible, lively and richly illustrated talk, Dr Pasquale Iannone (Lecturer in Film Studies at the University of Edinburgh) will dip into various genres (comedies, historical, dramas) to discuss a selection of Italian literary adaptations. Films to be discussed include The Gold of Naples (starring Sophia Loren, Totò and Silvana Mangano), The Leopard (starring Burt Lancaster, Alain Delon and Claudia Cardinale) and Kaos (starring Franco Franchi, Ciccio Ingrassia and Regina Bianchi).
To mark the centenary of Marcello Mastroianni, there will also be a discussion of Pereira Maintains, which features one of the Italian acting icon’s final roles. After the talk, there will be a relaxed social gathering, featuring cocktails and canapés in the spirit of an Aperitivo Culturale. It promises to be a lovely blend of culture, conversation, and, of course, good food and drinks!
